Opportunistic Wireless Recharging of Buried Agricultural Sensor Networks using Mobile Infrastructure

Abstract

This paper explores a methodology for opportunistic wireless charging of buried sensor nodes using irrigation systems and ground robots as mobile charging platforms. By integrating wireless power transfer (WPT) transmitters into these existing mobile platforms, buried sensors and communication hubs can be recharged without direct human intervention, ensuring continuous operation across large farmlands along with extended operational lifespans. By reducing the burden of battery charging or replacement, this approach enables the potential for dense sensor deployments for improved data collection in soil health monitoring, irrigation optimization, and nutrient tracking. The proposed wireless charging system leverages electrodynamic wireless power transfer (EWPT) to effectively deliver energy through soil at useful depths (e.g. 1-2 feet), overcoming limitations faced by conventional wireless power transfer methods.
